Updated: Aug 2, 2021

This essay is in the style of an introduction to an edition of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s (27 January 1756 – 5 December 1791) 'Bäsle Briefe'. Written to his cousin, Maria Anna Thekla Mozart, (25 September 1758 – 25 January 1841), the letters are brimming with scatological content, as well as humorous wordplay and erotic undertones. This edition hopes to inspire thoughtful interaction with the Bäsle Briefe, and fulfil the goal set out by Powell and Kushner: ‘to scrape the barnacles off the legend’.
